last time we went it was 89.66, i wonder how far it'll be this time? any discrepancy will be put down to tectonic plate movement.... run for your lives!

good cafe, but poplier, so i'll ring ahead.

anyone got marcus' number? as we could be going near avonmouth on the return journey and may need his peacemaking attributes again.

...any sweepstake monies should be paid directly to dave beaver.

    Ride report

Post  Martin on Sat Jul 13, 2013 8:06 pm

18 riders for a very warm morning. We set off fo Berkeley in the county of Gloucestershire somewhere north of Bristol. We tackled the cobles of the A370 but decided that it would be less hassle to get to Bristol via Yatton and Nailsea. Ivan was kind enough to give the climbers something to get their teeth into with Belmont hill. With such good weather many cars were out and were very glad to see us!
When we got to Bristol we went through Blaise Castle where again we were met by many friendly locals. Apparently the dogs in Bristol will move out of the way if you ring your bell! We dropped off half of the group Blaise Castle and continued on through Halam and Almondsbury and then up the A38. Some where near Falfield we saw the aftermath of a crash between a motorcycle and a car - not nice.
At Berkeley we took on alot of liquids and carbs. I liked the look of the ginger and chocolate fruit cake and asked if it contained nuts. The owner who makes the cakes told me it did'nt but when she said she suffered from memory loss I should have known better as it turned out to contain some sort of nuts. There also seemed to be a problem with asking for our water bottles to be topped up as they had to be done in the toilets, Dave was not impressed.
Nick decided to go local and did not come back on the return leg and stayed in Gloucester. The pace back was a bit more sedate, probably because it was so hot. We returned via Oldbury on Severn and the roads were nice and quiet. When we got to Avonmouth some riders were getting flash backs to a few weeks ago with red van man and road rage. At Portbury there was a split in the peleton. Neil was the ring leader of the break away group that decided to go to Clevedon via the cycle route next to the motorway with the rest of us going via Portishead. The final leg was via the Clevedon to Yatton expressway aka cycle route 10 and then the final slog down the A370. No one seemed up for the usual sprint points except for Richard who manage to beat me and Neil to the top of the Crem in Worle.
Great weather and a good ride.

    Nice report Martin.

I think knacker factor is about right but I knew I'd regret going to Berkey with a throat infection! I now have aching limbs, a pounding headache and a temperature! Not too clever when it's so hot anyway. Glad to have got home.

As for that little burst of energy up the Crem, that was only because I thought you looked far too spritely and I couldn't allow you to be better than me for the whole day!

Will be taking it easy today - stage 14 of le Tour should be a cracker.

Sorry Ivan - meant to pay my £1 for the sweep but forgot. I might claim it back as danger money having to follow Wild Weaver Beaver on the return leg yesterday.Embarassed
