tomorrow's ride takes in the delights of south somerset as we ride to the little chef/burger king at podimore. that's right, not one, but two high brow establishments to choose from. if the little chef is too busy it's burger king at a picnic bench (don't let it be said that you're not looked after.)

possible two stopper as well as we pass heaphey's and sweets on the way home; (i know, as if a little chef 'famous' olympic breakfast wasn't enough of a treat in itself!)

if you hadn't heard, tomorrow is national 'love a raleigh' day. so if you should just so happen to come across a rider on an old steel bike, give him a wheel and don't be tempted to fiddle with his downtube shifters. 75 on one of those is like 100 on a modern machine (i've got a horrible feeling that i may well be ACTUALLY knackered this week.)

    saturday 27/4 - 241 - podimore Empty Ride report

Post  Martin Sat Apr 27, 2013 6:26 pm

A sunny but cold morning got a dozen or more riders out of bed.
Mr Clapson decided we were to head for Podimore near Yeovil. Ivan choose to ride his latest purchase - 70s/80s Raleigh steel bike which weighed a ton but looked very nice. He was also sporting the appropriate retro outfit.
With the wind behind us we averaged nearly 18mph on the way down. On the hill out of Wedmore Paul rode past Ivan and flicked his downtube shifter causing the highest gear to be selected. Needless to say Ivan was'nt impressed :-).
We passed through Glastonbury where I spotted a bakery with a great name - Burns the Baker.
At Podimore we were treated to the finest fare the Little Chef could offer. Don't know if anyone else noticed the strange noises in the loos, which turned out to be noises of the countryside eg cows, sheep, birds etc coming from the speakers!
After a group photo we headed back with a head wind to fight against. Passing through Glastonbury Paul entered 'discussions' with a very irate motorist. Several locals offered to call the police with the offending cars registration number. Its good to know there are some nice people out there.
At Sweets we had our second coffee stop where Richard was official door monitor.
KoE - King of Everything goes to Richard and Nick who were both on good form today.
Little Chef Cake rating - 0/10 as i did'nt have cake and the breakfast was ok.
Sweets Cake rating - 9/10 nice big sweet coffec cake
    Official Jersey Count - 3
    Knacker factor - 9/10

Cracking ride Grommet. Podimore felt like the unexplored territories. Thought we might get attacked by native Indians but only spotted a couple in the Little Chef - or was it the Little Chief, cousin of Big Chief? As for cow noises in the bog, that was probably the buffalo roaming across the plains outside. You also forgot to mention the waitress. I can understand the attraction of handsome young men in lycra but I've no idea why she was looking at Ivan in his wooley underpants.

Nice photo taken by Burns the Baker of us cowboys remounting our trusty steeds, and Ivan straddling his station wagon. Definitely some karma going on in Glastonbury on the way back. I reckon that was pay back for that dastardly deed that Long John Burns pulled on Ivan on the way out. Did you see the big poster on the side of that car? - Clapson's PayBack Services.

Anyone ride the Merry Monk today? Sorry, I'll re-phrase that. Did anyone shag a bald man in a cassock today? Let me know how it went.
