Compared to recent weather it's forecast to be positively balmy on Wednesday with a light S wind and possibly a rain shower towards midday. Our choices of stops in a southerly direction are a bit limited within 25 miles so let's pay another visit to Street. Maybe numbers could exceed 2 this week? Route out Wolvershill, Summer Lane, Knightcott, Loxton, Rooks Bridge. Leave Priory at 9.01.59 approx

Wednesday15th February. Street Empty A rare treat

A rare treat indeed for fans of the forum. A Wednesday ride report!

Thought I'd left it a little late when I arrived at Priory. The anticipated crowds of cyclists had not materialised and I was faced with a dilemma. Do I park up at the back near the gate and risk not being seen by the rest of the group or near the road where I'd look a complete lemon if nobody else turned up?

I needn't have worried. Keith heralded the arrival of the other riders and pulled up next to me. We scanned up and down the road for signs of the others. We gave it as long as we could. We then resigned ourselves to the fact that the Wednesday group ride was not going to be a group ride. Just the two of us. Not sure where to go we decided on Sweets. Keith wasn't convinced but I said we can make it if we try. Just you and I.

We set off along Steve's planned route which was just as well as we found Nick wandering around Summer Lane looking for some proper cyclists. Can't say he was exactly impressed with the calibre of the dynamic duo but tagged along anyway. We hid our valuables as we approached Banwell. The Dandy Highwayman was prowling the streets and joined our merry threesome.

Jeannie then latched on at Rooksbridge to make FIVE! OMG I hear you cry. That's right, five. How many constitutes a group? I think I will allow myself to now call this a group ride. Hurrah!

The forecast was spot on. It rained all morning. Keith decided the best position to ride was behind the two without mudguards. I know his jacket started off green with brown spots but it wasn't long before it was brown with green spots. Jeannie had picked up a multitude of beauty spots but quickly wiped them away. Afterall there's no place for that kind of thing when you're a serious athlete. Personally I spend hours in front of the mirror before a ride, trying to look my best.

The inflight conversation then turned to the cafe stop. At some point we decided Two Gates was a good choice only for everyone to forget a minute later and go to Sweets anyway.

Sweets was overloaded with about four people. Two of them pretended to be cyclists but they clearly hadn't thought it through as no one could ever ride a bike in those conditions and be absolutely spotless.

Daddy bear complained that his coffee was only warm. Mummy bear complained that hers was too cold. Baby bear's was just right. Daddy bear then burnt the roof of his mouth on the reheated coffee. How we laughed. Pete provided after dinner entertainment with pictures of the pins in his leg and his muscle wastage.

We returned directly back to WSM in yet more rain. It had just about stopped by the time we got home. Typical! I took pity on Keith on the run up the A370 and kept the speed down to around 18-19's before belting through Uphill at 22's. I'm not sure who was more surprised at this point - Keith because it's just not the kind of thing you do on a Wednesday ride or me because he was still on my wheel! Fair play Keith.

Looking forward to another group ride on Saturday. Never knew cycling was so popular.
