    Cold = nothing too ambitious.

    We'll stick to the main roads as far as possible. Route out will be Wolvershill, Banwell, Winscombe, Cheddar.

    If it should be milder than forecast we'll head further, but Vicki's warming hearth will probably win out.

    Saturday 21st January - short and sweets Empty Ride Report

    For those that chose the short option see section titled:"No Effort Needed for a Large Breakfast".

    Whatever your ride distance it was certainly a brass monkey day. Apparently derived from souvenir monkey statues from the Far East, one of which featured a monkey covering his genitals! On the usual termperature scale this one registered as bloody cold. Hands were already suffering on the ride to Priory and by Woolvers Hill couldn't feel my fingers. Took some solace in the fact that everyone else seemed to be in the same boat. Not that anyone was actually in a boat. That would just be stupid. I mean you couldn't even row it in frozen water.

    Despite the cold the turn out was good. Roads were generally okay with just a few frosty patches. Martin dug deep into his book of excuses and found the perfect one for the conditions - frozen brake fluid! Not sure that was the reason for his sluggish riding as they were clearly frozen open rather than clamped against his disc and whoever worried about stopping!

    At Wedmore those who wanted a bike ride headed off for Wells whereas those using a bicycle as an excuse for a large fry up headed directly to Sweets. The athletes who set off for extra miles managed a moderate pace to Wells before the speed was cranked up on the road to Glastonbury. Jeannie was temporarily dropped by the time we reached 'Wrong Way Roundabout' but the high pace continued until the turn off to Meare where there was a temporary lull to,allow stragglers back on. Despite my best efforts to keep the speed down to about 21's Nick wanted to play and took the front again racking the pace up. Good turns from Wayne and Neil helped drag the bunch to Sweets.

    The usual high quality service in Sweets. Doesn't matter if you have to wait 2 minutes or 20. Doesn't matter if the food is good or bad. It's always service with a smile and as long as you can snap out of a dreamy daze while Vicky sorts out her baps and sit down to recover from the experience nothing else matters. Phil then set about trying to figure out why he's still putting on weight as he tucked into a monumental scrambled eggs on toast with beans. He also displayed a worrying amount of knowledge about 1980's tv to the extent that he knew the phone number of the vets in All Creatures Great and Small.

    The breakfast club set off first followed about 30 minutes later by the rest. Ivan led the group from the front at a distance of about 400 metres. No one else could be bothered to chase him down until Rooksbridge. A leisurely ride took us back to Loxton where we split up and headed for home.
