    Gears, chains and banana skins

8 riders started out from Priory. A good number for a midweek ride with 2 new steeds being flaunted. Our leader Bernie (who has still to appear on his new Giant) suggested the café at Chew Valley lake.

All went as planned until Wrington bogs where Paul announced his rear gear cable had broken. “No excuse!” We all cried, and got to work with a screwdriver on his rear mech giving him a lowest gear of 14/34. Plenty for a strong rider like Paul.

Continuing up Wrington/Redhill climb, Adrian’s new chain gave up the struggle to stay joined but all was not lost. A chain breaker and quicklink soon had him on the way again, but to loud protests from Paul when we turned left up Winters Lane to the back of the airport. A fairly steep climb even with a full complement of big cogs, but the mythical “they” say pushing a high gear on the hills is good for you so no problem. For us anyway.
Regrouping at the top we realised that Pete the Dandy Highwayman was missing. After a while we could only assume that he had not turned left up Winters Lane and would meet us at the tea stop. By some stroke of luck he just happened to be turning out of the Stowey road onto the A368 about 3 miles from the Lakeside, just as we rode past, apparently having followed a trail of banana skins. Fine detective work! Except we never went on that road.

Paul decided that the return via East Harptree climb would be too much for his 2 speeds so he decided to take the easy route home along with Adrian for company. That left 5 riders as Chris had to cut short earlier.

A hard slog up East Harptree and then into a fresh wind over the Mendips to the top of Burrington where we stopped to regroup. By chance Martin was just finishing the first of his 1 hill rep and joined us for the run back via Langford.

An incident packed ride to keep us all interested. Sunny but still cold in the fresh NW wind.
