forecast (/bowels) likely to be a bit unsettled so you may need a waterproof, but don't forget the binoculars to see the car drivers as they pass you.

this ride will be conducted on the right side of the road over a few hillocks. the first, croix de fer, has a nice coffee shop at the top; you'll have time for a few cappuccinos whilst you wait for ivan to arrive. it would be fair though to wait at the top of the 2nd hummock, la toussaire, so that ivan can eat with you (not that he needs extra food.) the 3rd pimple, glandon sees an end to the climbing and the promise of a 20 mile descent. don't forget to pop into the cafe in allemont before returning home, the resident village idiot will take your mind off any leg pains. on returning to bourg d'oisins you could always pop up the alpe or galibier whilst waiting for ivan to roll in.

distance likely to be >160 clicks, ascent will be about 30ft.

ojc - 4 (paul won't, especially if we all do!)

5 riders turned up la cascades hotel for a pre ride full english breakfast, but settled for the french alternative. Ivan impressed the team with the length of his meat baguette.

A variable forecast put us off doing a big ride so we decided to pop up to galibier. Adrian was most pleased to find that he, neil and nick had mised the official start time by 8 minutes. But 30 minutes of hot pursuit enabled them to catch up and he graciously accepted his wrong doing and the ride continued.

Ivan, fueled by the previous nights lager pulled the crew for an impressive 200 metres setting up the team perfectly for the next 20 miles of climbing to lateret.

Adrian again made friends with an East anglian (somewhere in Africa) who was most impressed by his sucking off.

From lateret the team ground up to galibier. Needless to say, ivan got kom. Paul tried valiantly to pull him back but to no avail. Back to lateret and the cafe stop. We all opted for the mange de cycliste which offered us the smallest language challenge from the menu. A great starter and main course (soup and spag bol) though the baby food dessert didn't meet with universal approval.

The descent was predictably Harum scarum. I had an average speed of 29mph but paul and nick beat me.

At some french sounding village 15 miles down the hill nick persuaded us to detour upto the cliff road above bourg. The climb up was ridiculously hard but the views from the top made it worthwhile. Luckily it srarted the thunder and lightning (a little bit frightening) which made the technical descent down a sigle track, potholed road with a cliff edge reward for any mistakes especially enjoyable.

We finished the ride by spending lots of the kitty on lagers. Especially satisfying as paul had gone ahead and missed out.

Only other mention should be neil's helmet issues. But the least said the better.
