No A and B teams this week. Just the elite riders out grafting while the rest were idly watching the tour.
Six riders had risen from their slumbers for the 8:15 start at Priory. Although I was planning to lead the ride I couldn't find enough gay kit to wear so handed over the reins to Adrian. Headed out through St Georges and across to Sandford, Winscombe and Cheddar. At Cheddar we were down to five riders with Kara/Cara/Kiera/Kaaraa/Keearra/Keeora/Kiora/no idea how to spell it turning back. We decided to head up a greasy gorge as they say and very much enjoyed coming over the top in damp conditions.
A brisk belt over the top and down to Wells before we set off down the main road to Glastonbury in groups of 5 or 2 or 3 or 1 depending on which part of the road you were on at any one time. Pleasing to say we were holding 22 mph along the main road which at least matched the pro riders average for the first stage of the tour!
After refreshments in Heaphy's we headed back across Godney Moor and treated Pete, Sam and Mike to the delights of Daggs Lane. We then followed the usual route back via Blackford, Weare, A38, Cross and Bleadon before we lost Adrian who had slipped off the front for a quick one over the hill while the rest of us went around the bottom (ooh err). Pete said not to wait for him, so we didn't.
OJC: 1
TTCF: 7/10 - prices seem to have gone up a little although still reasonably good food. Scenery however was excellent and I would give this one a 9/10 totty rating.
KFC: 6/10 - average about 17.something mph, 59 miles, bit blustery and a few hills.
