forecast good, dry and mild, guess what...

the port of lang beckons, as if you hadn't guessed.

we may go down through burrowbridge and take it from behind for a change, back through somerton for a nice round 80 miler  pale

unsure about triathlete option this time, perhaps they'll be happy to go to truckers from woolavington (presuming happiness is an emotion allowed by their training regime.)

about 15 runners and riders gathered to take advantage of a rare dry, mild december saturday.

at the base of woolavington hill 5 riders continued up and over and on to langport, leaving the runners to head off for hilltops cafe.

the beginning of the ride was somewhat disrupted as one of the runners had to pop home for a water bottle. a wise move, as it's difficult to imagine that he'd have managed the 45 mile route at 15mph otherwise; especially with the emergency services at full stretch over the festive period.

the rider's enjoyed a good leg stretch and the cafe served up the usual menu of giggly, flat chested waitresses; though at £6 a panini, one would hope for something more buxom. the free supplies of aloe road rash wipes was a thoughtful touch though, given the slippery road conditions.

neil's ffwd carbon winter tub's came through the test of the 2 mile gravel canal path and the 18" thick slurry past chedzoy. but the same could not be said of meirion's bullet proof tyres; i'm sure he'd welcome the opportunity to talk you through the merits of continental gatorskins, so give him a call.

the ride back was pretty keen as we took advantage of a friendly wind; the group showed great generosity on the hills at the end, allowing a 16 stone blue whale to pass them, unexpected but welcome, thanks lads!

    OJC - 1
TTC rating - ? food was costly but nice = 6, free aloe road rash wipes = 1, however, flatchestedness, giggles and coffee theft = -5 so final score..... 2/10
knacker factor - runners = -8 (how much further can 'tapering' go?)
    riders = 7 a good winter workout

You can't beat Hilltops cafe for a warm festive welcome. I'm sure i saw the owner almost crack a smile :-) However the waitress was more than amply endowed.
We were entertained in the cafe when Mars showed us her latest iphone app "Elf Yourself" where you can put a picture of your face on the characters and they dance around. Well worth a go.
The runners and one ex-rider returned home via A38 and some back roads at the dizzying speed of 25mph but for some reason it didn't help the overall average which was 15.1mph.
No punctures for us and Andy retrieved his mudguards from Monks hill.

TTC = a very average 5/10 for the teacake and a 6/10 for the mince pie which was cheap but the deep filled variety. But having to get your own cutlery lets them down a bit. Overall 5/10
    Knacker factor = 5/10

Didn't realise the tri option was Hilltops - too busy chasing Ade up Woolavington hill. Not that I would have stopped for coffee (not being a tri-athlete and all that). Nice tail wind to blow me home - 1hr 45 mins out and 1 hr 10 back at a 21 mph average.
