about 15 runners and riders gathered to take advantage of a rare dry, mild december saturday.
at the base of woolavington hill 5 riders continued up and over and on to langport, leaving the runners to head off for hilltops cafe.
the beginning of the ride was somewhat disrupted as one of the runners had to pop home for a water bottle. a wise move, as it's difficult to imagine that he'd have managed the 45 mile route at 15mph otherwise; especially with the emergency services at full stretch over the festive period.
the rider's enjoyed a good leg stretch and the cafe served up the usual menu of giggly, flat chested waitresses; though at £6 a panini, one would hope for something more buxom. the free supplies of aloe road rash wipes was a thoughtful touch though, given the slippery road conditions.
neil's ffwd carbon winter tub's came through the test of the 2 mile gravel canal path and the 18" thick slurry past chedzoy. but the same could not be said of meirion's bullet proof tyres; i'm sure he'd welcome the opportunity to talk you through the merits of continental gatorskins, so give him a call.
the ride back was pretty keen as we took advantage of a friendly wind; the group showed great generosity on the hills at the end, allowing a 16 stone blue whale to pass them, unexpected but welcome, thanks lads!
OJC - 1
TTC rating - ? food was costly but nice = 6, free aloe road rash wipes = 1, however, flatchestedness, giggles and coffee theft = -5 so final score..... 2/10
knacker factor - runners = -8 (how much further can 'tapering' go?)
riders = 7 a good winter workout
